Sport in Stockholm


A swim in the beautiful Liljeholmsbadet, which dates from 1929, is a good way to relax.

Pools

Bathing beach. In or near Stockholm: Erstaviksbadet, Flatenbadet, Långholmsbadet, Magelungsbadet, Mälarhöjdens friluftbad, Smedsuddsbadet.


Outdoor pools. Nälstabadet, Vanadisbadet and Älvsjöbadet.


Indoor swimming pools. Enskedehallens bad, Eriksdalsbadet, Farstabadet, Forsgrenska, Kronobergsbadet, Liljeholmsbadet.

Boules

Prins Bertils Boulehall at Djurgården, Boulehallen Boule Ett on Närkesgatan and Bouleakademien on Surbrunnsgatan 6.

Cycling

Hire bikes from companies such as Cykel- & Mopeduthyrningen, Kajplats 24, Strandvägen.

Football

From the spring of 2006 Stockholm will have three premier league football teams: Djurgården (that won the national championships and the cup in 2005), Hammarby and AIK. Stockholm has two top teams in the ladies' premier division: Djurgården/ Älvsjö (cup winners in 2004/2005) and Hammarby. Match days - see What's on in Stockholm.

Golf

There are over 50 golf courses around Stockholm. At many of them you don't just have to be a member of a club, but also have a handicap of 36 to be able to play. There are also some "Pay&Play" courses if you don't have a membership/ green card, e.g. Årsta Golf, Vidbynäs and Skepptuna.

Globen is Stockholm's major arena for ice hockey and other indoor sports and events.

Ice hockey

Stockholm's representative in the elite series is Djurgården, a team which plays its home matches at the Globe Arena. A lot of international matches and other major matches are also played here. Match days - see What's on in Stockholm.

Jogging

Med sina många grönområden och vackra stigar längs vatten är Stockholm en joggares paradis. For instance, try Around Djurgården, around Kungsholmen, Gärdet, Lilljanskogen and Hagaparken.

Canoes/kayaks

Can be hired from places such as Djurgårdsbrons sjöcafé, Brunnsvikens Kanotcentral or Stockholms Paddlarklubb at Kananbadet.


Climbing

Indoors: Klätterverket in Sickla, Klätterhallen Karbin in Hägersten and Klättercentret in Solna.

 

Outdoors: Söder Mälarstrand at Münchenbryggeriet and Kanalklippan, Danvikstull.

 

 

In the summer you can climb in the middle of the city, at Söder Mälarstrand.


The Stockholm Marathon goes through beautiful Stockholm, often at the water's edge.   

 

Long-distance running

Since the 1912 Olympics, Stockholm has been a classic place for runners to run, and the Stockholm Marathon is said to be the most beautiful long-distance race in the world. Competitions, 2006 (find out more at www.marathon.se):

 


When Riddarfjärden freezes over you can skate through the city centre.

Winter sports

When the weather is cold, Stockholm is the perfect city for winter sports. You can often go skating  on the lakes around the city, and sometimes even as far into town as the City Hall. In Kungsträdgården, there's a little winter ice rink. Around town, you'll find lots of tracks for cross-country skiing.
