Shopping in Stockholm

The question is, what's the best thing about the shopping city of Stockholm? The fact that there's so much to choose from? Or the fact that almost everything is within a comfortable walking distance?

Enjoy a shopping trip back in time to the 40s and 50s at Sivletto, Malmgårdsvägen 16-18.

Södermalm – the new, young district

New York has its SoHo, London has its Soho. Now Stockholm has its - Sofo. Sofo stands for "South of Folkungagatan" – the district south of Folkungagatan and east of Götgatan. The trendiest district in the city, with shops such as Tjallamalla, Grandpa and Sneakers'n'stuff.

Gamla stan – old fashioned Swedish

Small, winding streets selling Swedish handicrafts souvenirs in a super environment. Österlånggatan har flest hantverksbutiker, Västerlånggatan flest souvenirer. In these alleys, you'll find antiques shops, arts and crafts and clothes.

There are many really good shops among the "tourist traps" of Gamla stan.

Östermalm – a little more exclusive

For fashion and design connoisseurs. Kookaï, DonDonna, Filippa K, Gucci, Armani and Rizzo. Sturegallerian – a host of small shops. Biblioteksgatan – lots of exclusive shops, including antiques shops and art galleries.

Sturegallerian has many small boutiques assembled by Stureplan.

Department stores and malls

The major department stores in the heart of the city.

Classic: NK och PUB. Biggest: Åhléns. Newest: Debenhams.

Malls: Gallerian, almost opposite NK. Bruno på Götgatsbacken. Västermalmsgallerian at Kungsholmen.

NK is Sweden's most classic shopping temple, today a lively mall.

The major gift areas

Swedish design. Sibyllegatan: Asplunds. Götgatan: 10-gruppen and David Design. Strandvägen: Svenskt Tenn and Carl Malmsten.

New designers. Designtorget below Sergels Torg.

Classically beautiful at Stockholm's best address - Strandvägen.

At Hallen, which is what regulars themselves call Östermalmshallen, you can find just about every kind of food imaginable.

Some nice things to take home

Östermalmshallen. Perfect ingredients, delicacies and homemade food in unique surroundings dating back to 1888.

Söderhallarna. Söder's own delicacies hall.

Hötorgshallen. Fresh fish, meat, greens and delicacies from all over the world.
