Getting around in Stockholm

If you're coming by air

Arlanda: 40 km to the city. The Arlanda Express takes 20 minutes. The bus takes twice as long but costs half as much.

Bromma: 8 km to the city by bus/taxi.

Skavsta: 100 km, one hour and twenty minutes by bus.

If you're coming by train

The Central Station is located in the heart of the city. Buses, underground and local trains to all of Greater Stockholm.

By bus

A straightforward way to get about; you'll have rows all to yourself in many places. Popular tourist routes: no. 47 bus to Djurgården with Gröna Lund, Skansen and the Vasa Museum, and no. 68 bus to the National Museum of Science and Technology and Kaknästornet.

Underground (T)

Three different lines, 110 km long in total and with almost as many stations. Known as the world's longest art exhibition due to the many works of art on display there.

Trams

Old museum trams, every day June – August from Norrmalmstorg to Djurgården. Weekend service the rest of the year.

Tvärbanan

New "underground" above ground. Take a trip through time, from Alvik's 1920s houses via the 1950s houses at Årsta centre, to Hammarby Sjöstad, Stockholm's newest district.

Commuter trains

Fast local trains to Södertälje and Nynäshamn in the south and Märsta in the north. Also Roslagsbanan and Saltsjöbanan.
You can travel on the same ticket on all SL (Stockholms Lokaltrafik) buses, underground lines, commuter trains, etc.

Djurgården ferry

You can catch a ferry to Djurgården, which has many of the city’s biggest attractions, from Skeppsbron, next to Slussen.

See the city on the water from the water...

Sightseeing tours by boat, e.g. Under Stockholm's bridges, around Djurgården and around Kungsholmen.

...or from a tour bus

There are two different sightseeing tours by bus in Stockholm: The red buses that start from Gustav Adolfs torg, and the yellow and purple jump-on/jump-off buses that depart from Kungsträdgåren.

Excursion boats

Daily service to the Stockholm archipelago and Mälaren. Mälaren boats, including the boat to Drottningholm, the royal family's residence, leave from the quay at City Hall. The boats out in the archipelago depart from Nybroviken, along Strandvägen or outside the Grand Hotel. From Slussen, take the Djurgården ferry and the boat to Nacka Strand and Fjäderholmarna.
