Our hottest tips

Clubs in Rome

Muccassassina is one of Italy's best known gay parties. Every Friday night, thousands of people meet here to party to various types of music on three floors. Some of the takings go to charity. This is perhaps the coolest evening in Rome, and both gay and straight people enjoy it.

Flea market and second-hand

Via Sannio is the place for you if you like street markets selling more or less junk, but where you can find the odd bargain or two. Unfortunately, it's getting harder and harder to find really unique or valuable stuff, because Rome's antique dealers usually go and "hoover up" the bargains before other people get there. Second-hand clothes shops are the places where you'll find most of the bargains to be found at reasonable prices.

Popular, festive, full

Campo dei Fiori is a popular meeting place for young people in Rome (just like it's been for generations of Romans). Ask anyone and they'll show you the way. Here on the square, you can enjoy a glass of beer or wine in an historical setting. Take the opportunity to visit the nearby Piazza Navona at the same time, and the oldest Jewish ghetto in the world.

A cool dinner

Osteria dell'Ingegno is a trattoria just off the main street at Piazza Navona. The menu is simply but at the same time innovative, and changes with the seasons. The premises are furnished in a modern style, and you'll be welcomed by walls covered in art by local artists who themselves often visit the trattoria. The chef cooks fresh ingredients in tasty herbs and spices. Recently, we enjoyed walnut ravioli in an elegant cheese sauce, followed by salmon marinated in three varieties of pepper, orange and ginger. Another favourite is the roast duck in sweet and sour sauce, flavoured with wine and raisins. All desserts are homemade. Piazza di Pietra 45.

The best views?

One of the most beautiful views in Rome, from Gianicolo hill, can be seen from the other side of the river Tiber. Although this isn't one of the seven famous hills of Rome, it's one of the ones most  often visited. The dawn, with the sun rising over Rome, is really beautiful. According to mythology, Gianicolo hill was chosen by the god Janus. His son, Tiber, gave the river its name.
The finest panoramas can otherwise be found in front of the church of San Pietro in Montorio, which was built in the late 15th century.

The café that's a must

Next to some elegant sights such as the church of Santa Maria della Pace (with statuettes by Rafael) and a cloister designed by Bramante, you'll find the Caffè della Pace. Beautiful turn of the century fittings made of wood, marble and mirrors.

When in Rome, do as the Romans do

If you ask a born and bred Roman where to find the best pizza in town, you'll normally hear the name Pizzeria Baffetto. They've been making pizzas here for 80 years, in three sizes: piccolo, media or grande. Real pizza aficionados often order Margheritas, with mozzarella and tomato sauce, but there's a huge range to choose from. The house speciality is the pizza Baffetto, topped with mozzarella, mushrooms, onion, salami, paprika and egg. The pizza bases are thin and crispy because of the way they're baked.

Not the usual nice sightseeing boat

If you want to see Rome from the Tiber, go for Battelli di Roma, a water bus with or without a guide, beneath the bridges of Rome. You'll pass the church of San Pietro (at a distance), Castel Sant'Angelo and the little island of Isola Tiberina. These trips depart daily from Sant'Angelo bridge, near the Vatican. There's also an evening tour, which includes dinner.

Cool in the heat

You'll find little "chioschi" selling Grattachecca on street corners here and there throughout the summer months. Large blocks of ice are scraped into fine flakes using an iron "grattugia" and flavoured with fruit concentrate or all kinds of fresh fruit. The most famous grattachecca kiosk is Sora Mirella at Lungotevere Anguillara, near to Ponte Cestio.
