Getting around in Rome

Enormous network of buses and trams, but just two underground lines (as soon as they try to extend them, they find more ancient relics!). Be prepared for dense traffic - and for the fact that the timetables are rarely accurate as a result.

By air

Rome has two major airports. Fiumincino Leonardo da Vinci 35 km from the city centre. Direct trains to Termini Station every half hour, takes about 35 minutes, approx. ?9.50. Taxi approx. 40 minutes, approx. ? 35-40. Ciampino, 15 km from the city centre. The fastest and cheapest way to get into the city: by COTRAL bus to Anagnina and then the underground to the centre, approx. ?1.10. Alternatively, take the bus to Ciampino railway station and then get the train straight to Roma Termini. A taxi from Ciampino to Rome takes approx. 30 minutes, approx. ?25-30.

By bus and tram

Numerous routes all over town, day and night. Info on public transport at www.atac.roma.it. Always stamp your ticket in the orange
machine on board!

Bus routes that it might be worth remembering:
46 Passes the Vatican State and Piazza Venezia.
64 From the Church of San Pietro to Termini Station.
95 Passes Bocca della Verità, Piazza Venezia, Via Veneto and
Villa Borghese.
628 Passes Terme di Caracalla, Marcellus Theatre, Largo Argentina and Ara Pacis.

Tickets

Tickets can be bought from machines at underground stations and bus terminals, at tobacconists' shops, in newspaper kiosks and in some bars. They can't be bought on board the train. The most common tickets for buses, Metro, trams and local trains:
BIT, single ticket.
5BIT, multiple use ticket for five journeys.
BIG, 24-hour ticket offering an unlimited number of journeys.
CIS, weekly ticket offering an unlimited number of journeys.

Taxis

The authorised cars are white or yellow and can be found at taxi ranks. Stopping a taxi on the street isn't particularly common. Taxi posts can be found at Piazza del Popolo, Largo Argentina, Pantheon, Piazza Venezia, Piazza San Silvestro, Piazza Sonnino, Piazza di Spagna and Termini. Hotels, restaurants, etc. will be happy to call a taxi for you. Expect to have to tip 10%.
