Cool kids' stuff in Rome

On the one hand, Rome - unlike many other major cities - doesn't have a particularly large number of special attractions and events for children. On the other hand, almost everyone is really nice to children. And this generous attitude can also be seen by the fact that a lot of things are free for children. For instance, children under ten travel free on buses, underground trains and trams.

A fun amusement park, mainly for younger children. Teenagers will probably find the rides a bit wimpy. Via delle Tre Fontane (EUR).

This is the amazing view you'll see from the hot air balloon at Galoppatoio di Villa Borghese.

A different way to see Rome

From a boat on the Tiber. Regular boat trips and tourist boats depart all day long, even in winter. Get on at Ponte Duca d'Aosta or Isola Tiberina.

From a hot air balloon. See Rome from an altitude of 150 metres in the balloon tied up at Galoppatoio, at the top of Via Veneto.

On rollerskates. At 21.00 on Wednesdays, rollerskaters of all ages gather at Piazza del Popolo for a trip round town.

The Pasta Museum in Rome has even been honoured with a stamp of its own

Fun only in the summer...

On Janiculum hill, there's a fun dolls' theatre every day except Wednesdays during the summer months, and even kids who don't understand Italian usually have fun here.

Take the opportunity to enjoy the view when you're on the Janiculum hill.

...and only in the winter

Closer to Christmas, there's a toy exhibition at Piazza Navona. And while most of the nativity scenes at home are usually miniatures, the one at San Pietro is gigantic.

Children's own flea market

The first Sunday and second Saturday of every month, kids organise their own flea market selling clothes, CDs, "jewellery", etc. at Via Francesco Crispi 92 at the entrance to the Ludovisi multistorey car park near to Via Veneto.

At Giolitti, the premises are as beautiful as the ice cream is delicious.

Lots of ice cream

Italy is renowned for its delicious ice cream, and many people think Rome makes the best ice cream of all. Here are a few tips:

Alberto Pica. Lots of exciting flavours, e.g. rice.
Ciampini Viale Trinita dei Monti. Delicious chocolate ice cream and magnificent views. At the very top of the Spanish steps, behind the grapevines.
Fragola e Limone. At "The strawberry and lemon", these two flavours are a speciality. Generous portions! Via Giustiniari, between Pantheon and Piazza Navona.
Gelateria en Piazza. Ice cream lovers make pilgrimages to Piazza San Cosimato in Trastevere for the chocolate and strawberry ice creams here.
Giolitti. Delicious ice cream has been sold on the same premises here for over a century! Via Uffici del Vicario 40.
San Crispino. Many experts reckon it's the best in town. Via della Panetteria 42, near to Fontana di Trevi.
Tre Scalini. Classic gelateria at Piazza Navona.
Via Bastioni di Michelangelo 5. Perfect for an ice cream break not far from the Vatican museums

Al Sogno. Number one toyshop. Everything from classic favourites to today's latest. Piazza Navona 53.
Città del Sole. Loads of play-and-learn toys and games. Via della Scrofa 65.
Menasci. A paradise for anyone who loves wooden toys. Via Napoleone III.

Al Sogno toyshop, loved by children from one to one hundred.

Zoo

Rome Zoo, to be honest, is nothing particularly noteworthy, but what child can't stand around looking at animals for hours? Bioparco, Villa Borghese

Trams

For many children, travelling by tram is a fascinating new experience. For example, take the no. 3 from viale Trastevere to Villa Borghese, an exciting trip round town that takes you close to the Zoo.

"Mummy, I want to go for a swim"

When it's hot in Rome, take the underground to Cristoforo Colombo, on the route heading for Lido di Ostia, and then continue by bus to Torvaianica. Here, 30 km south of Rome, you can take a dip in the Mediterranean.
