Food and drink in Rome

Here, a complete dinner consists of antipasto (cold meats or salad), primo piatti (the first course, as a rule pasta), secondo piatti (the main course, meat dishes or fish dishes - side dishes often have to be ordered separately) and dolce (dessert). But more and more people are making do with a salad, main course and dessert, for example, or just a pasta. Pizzerias and other simple restaurants expect five per cent tips, while the finer places expect no more than ten per cent.

From the roof terrace at La Pergola, the best restaurant in town, you have the whole of Rome at your feet.
