Hongkonga. Does not look like a Chinese restaurant at all, but serves genuine Chinese food with lots of taste. Valdemara 61.

 

Indian Raja. Nominated one of the world’s best Indian restaurants. Genuine Indian food which has not been “westernised”. Vecpilsetas 3.

 

Kabuki. Chic, popular, world-class sushi establishment. Barona 14.

 

1739. Do not be deterred by the tourist menus, this is a genuinely good Italian restaurant. Skarnu 6.


Although the Soviet grip has long since loosened, old Russia has become cool in Latvia.

Big Brother in the East

Arbat. Here you are quickly transported to 18th-century Moscow. Good Russian food in spectacular premises. Vagnera 3.

 

Austruma Robeza. Soviet-inspired interior decoration; almost resembling a bunker. Vagnera 8.

 

Nostalgija. The décor is from the Soviet era - but not the food. Lean back and enjoy Russian caviar. Kalku 22.

 

Trakteris. Eat in rural, 18th-century Russia. Staff in costume. Antonijas 8.

Apsara Tea House. They are better at tea than coffee in Latvia, and good tea can be drunk in this tea-house that is full of oriental influences. Terbatas 2.

 

Double Coffee. Cosy coffee-house which also serves great hot chocolate. At several locations including at Raina 25.

 

Smaragds. A traditional café popular with traditional, older members of the public. Live piano music, candelabras. Jana 18.

 

Tropics. Pressed juice of all possible and impossible fruits and vegetables. Stabu 14.
