“The Englishmen’s walk” earned its name because of the many Englishmen, including Queen Victoria, who holidayed here in the 19th century.

Don’t miss!

Promenade des Anglais. Nice’s legendary beach promenade. A place to see and be seen

Cours Saleya. A colourful flower and vegetable market in the old town.

Le Parc Floral. The world’s largest greenhouse, with over 2000 different plant varieties.

“The head”. This exciting (according to some, others would say challenging) building in the centre of Nice contains offices, while Nice’s new library is below the head.

The Russian Orthodox Cathedral was built as a memorial to a Russian tsar who dined and drank himself to death in Nice.

Architectural sights

The Franciscan Cloisters. Peaceful 18th century cloisters with beautiful gardens.

Palais Lascaris. A baroque palace from 1648 with a 250-year-old apothecary. Here you can see how the rich citizens of Nice lived in the 18th century.

Hotel Negresco. A legendary hotel with a pink dome that’s become a landmark on the beach promenade.

The Russian Orthodox Cathedral. A real Russian cathedral that is a strange sight among the surrounding houses.

St. Réperata. Baroque church from the 16th century, with sturdy marble decorations.

Meet Matisse at the beautiful Matisse-museet.

Museums

Musée d'Art Moderne et d'Art Contemporain (MAMAC). Modern art with the emphasis on the 20th century Nice school, but also contemporary Americans such as Warhol.

Musée Matisse. A large Matisse collection. He lived in Nice for periods of time.

Musée National du Message Biblique Marc-Chagall. A collection of Chagall’s work with biblical themes.

Musée de Archéologie. Here you can follow the Nice’s history from 1100 BCE until the Middle Ages.

One of many perfume factories in Grasse.

Excursions

Monaco. Only 20 minutes from Nice by train. Look at the expensive cars, the fabled casino and stroll among the rich and famous.

Villefranche. A charming little fishing village that still has a genuinely French feel, even if more and more cruise ships and luxury yachts are crowding the harbour.

Antibes. A wonderful mixture of old and new a short way to the west of Nice. Don’t miss the Picasso museum or the food market on Cours Masséna.

Grasse. A beautiful mountain town 12 miles inland, with a town centre from the Middle Ages. It is the centre of the French perfume industry.
