Sport in London

Cricket

Cricket can be seen at grounds such as The Oval and Lord's.

Rugby

Grounds include Sunbury (London Irish), Causeway Stadium (London Wasps) and Vicarage Road (The Saracens).

Football

In London, football is sport number one. Six London teams play in England’s top division, The Premiership: Arsenal, Charlton Athletic, Chelsea, Fulham, Tottenham Hotspurs and West Ham United. It is often difficult to get tickets for big matches.

Tennis

Wimbledon - the world’s most famous tennis tournament - is held annually in London at The All England Lawn Tennis Club. In London, there are two other tennis tournaments: Stella Artois Grass Court Championship and Masters Tennis. If you want to play tennis yourself, you have facilities at Crystal Palace National Sports Centre.

Climbing

Cycling

London Bicycle Tour Company offers guided cycle tours lasting three hours. At Herne Hill Velodrome, the world’s oldest cycle track, both competing cyclists and beginners are welcome.

Riding

In Hyde Park, London’s beautiful green lung, you can hire horses and equipment, Hyde Park Stables. Good routes throughout the park.

Golf

You can practise this classic English sport in London even without being a member of a club. There are pay-and-play courses for both advanced players and beginners. Can often be reached by underground, for example to get to Trent Park take a tube from Oakwood. You can even play indoor golf, via interactive golf courses, at Wright Swing Golf in Dockland.

Jogging

London’s many parks are perfect for joggers. In Hyde Park, there are plenty of tracks, most of which are floodlit at night. Other great places for running include Hampstead Heath, Battersea Park and Mile End Park. In London, people also enjoy long-distance running events, primarily the London Marathon, one of the world’s best marathon courses.

Sports museums

At the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Museum & Tour you can come face to face with the history of the sport, famous players of yesteryear and clips from matches. Arsenal football club has its own museum as well as guided tours of Arsenal Stadium. Chelsea, Charlton and Tottenham also open their stadiums to the public.
