Not to be missed in Helsinki!

What does someone from Helsinki recommend when good friends come to visit? Metro’s journalists in the Finnish capital share some of their top tips below. Help yourself!

Fortress of Suomenlinna

UNESCO world heritage site outside Helsinki. The biggest historical sea fortress in Scandinavia dates from the 18th century and is well worth a visit at any time of the year. Restaurants, museums, art galleries, etc. An ideal place for a summer picnic. To get there, take a ferry from Salutorget.

Harjutori public sauna

The only wood-burning public sauna left in Helsinki. Feel the spirit of times gone by, a time when public saunas played an important role in hygiene as well as social life.

Spårakoff

Helsinki City Transport’s contribution to the city’s restaurant life. The red tram restaurant car operates from mid-May to mid-August. Spårakoff runs on a circular route, and you can get on and off when you want. Beer and cider is available to buy on board Spårakoff.

Helsinki from the sea

Helsinki is known as the Daughter of the Baltic Sea, and its true face can be seen from a cruise on the water bus from Salutorget. There are many routes to choose from.

Seurasaari

To enjoy a rest or walk through peaceful countryside, take bus no 24 from the centre to Seurasaari, an open-air museum a few kilometres from the city. Follow the paths to look at old houses from different parts of Finland. There are also beaches and picnic areas. Events arranged here include needlecraft displays, concerts and a Midsummer feast.

Senaatintori

The cathedral with its stairs is the cultural soul of the city. It is surrounded by grand Empire-style buildings. Nearby are Salutorget, Gamla Saluhallen and Uspenski Cathedral.

Restaurang Pataässä

Finns are known for singing when they get drunk, and Pataässä does nothing to disprove this reputation. This is the best-known karaoke restaurant in Helsinki. Here, in the district of Kronohagen, near the centre, ordinary people and, from time to time, sports stars and other celebrities sing.

Högholmen Zoo

The zoo has approx two hundred animal species and almost a thousand plant species. It is open all the year round, and only closes on Christmas Eve. Högholmen is located in Kronbergsfjärden, near the centre of Helsinki.

Linnanmäki

A must for children and adults who want to feel young again. Linnanmäki is Finland’s oldest and biggest amusement park. Also on offer – a Christmas party package including supper and the musical Linnunradan Laidalla, a magical story about a circus family. Otherwise, the amusement park is open from the end of April to mid-September.

The bar scene

Helsinki enjoys international fame for its cool bar and club scene. Nylandsgatan and its surroundings, for example, offer many alternatives. Helsinki has also increasingly gained a reputation as a “gay-friendly city”. Don’t Tell Mama, for example, is the biggest gay restaurant in Scandinavia.
