Let’s go and “hygge”, as the Danes often say. “Hygge” means anything from having a nice time, laughing and relaxing, eating something nice, to downing one (or a few) and generally enjoying yourself.

Danish “smørrebrød” (sandwiches)

Is there anything more Danish than “smørrebrød” loaded high with tasty fillings? What about a “Dyrlægens natmad” – generously filled with baked liver pâté, “saltrulle” (marinated roll of meat from the outer hind leg), sliced or roasted onion and usually grated horseradish?

In-places

Café Viktor. It was here, at Ny Östergade 8, that the Danish “café revolution” was started by Torben Olsen, who has also opened Dan Turell, Café Sommersko and Café Ketchup.


Olsens Spisehus. Three of Torben Olsen’s pupils started up on their own and named the restaurant after their master. Success – and a whole restaurant emporium grew up: exclusive Konrad, the National Museum’s Café & Restaurant, Egoisten and Gendarmen.

New favourites

Young people often meet at Sankt Hans Torv at Nørrebro.

At Café Sebastopol you can eat meat and shellfish just like at a French brasserie.

Pølsevognen

Danish institution that is dying out – but you will still find old-fashioned hot-dog stands that serve the classic red sausages with “risted løg” (roasted onion).

 

At Rådhuspladsen you can try a real red Danish sausage.
