Sport in Budapest

All the major football matches and open-air athletics events are held at the Puskás Ferenc stadium (formerly the Nép stadium) which has a capacity of 68,000. Indoor events are generally held in Budapest Arena right alongside.

Football

Football is Hungary’s largest spectator sport and the most popular are the major teams from Budapest. Going to watch football in Budapest is much cheaper than in cities such as Rome, Barcelona and London.

Ferencváros. Largest and most successful club over the years. Known as "Fradi" by supporters.

Honvéd. Had its heyday in the 50s, home to Hungary’s megastars over the years, Ferenc Puskás.

MTK Budapest. Last year on the up – overtaking one Budapest team after the other in the league.

Újpest. Thought to be entering a new period of greatness – its biggest to date was in the 30s.

Basketball

Increasingly becoming Hungary’s new major national sport. Many teams have American players, which has helped to boost interest.

Golf

Hungary has a host of notable courses laid out by international proprietors. Two are about 40 km from Budapest.

Pannónia Golf & Country Club. 18 holes, par 72, Alcsútdoboz, Máriavölgy (west of the city).
Budapest Golfpark & Country Club. 18 holes, par 72, Kisoroszi, open 1/3-15/11, (north of Budapest).

Skating

You can do it for free in the winter at Olof Palme sétány if you take your skates with you. Otherwise, you can hire them.

Széchenyi bath’s large outdoor pool is open all year round.

Water sports

With the many bathhouses and lakes, above all the vast lake Balaton, water sports are popular in Hungary, not least swimming, water polo and canoeing.

Most see the many baths, not least the thermal baths in Budapest, as a way of meeting people and socialising. Many outdoor pools stay open in the winter – read more under Things to see and do.

Hungary Grand Prix

The Hungary Grand Prix is one of the Formula 1 races which draws the biggest crowds – despite the fact that the race, possibly due to its slower course, is not as spectacular as courses in, say, San Marino or Monaco.

Budapest Marathon

Two major annual running events in October: Budapest International Marathon, reckoned to be one of the world’s major "nightmares", and the Coca-Cola Budapest Woman Race.

Sports museum

Do not miss the sports museum, complete with films, photos, medals and other sports memorabilia from Hungary’s major sporting events. Dozsa Gyorgy ut 3.
