Marvel at the view from the fishermen’s bastion, a fort that got its name from the fact that right next to it there was once a tower where fish was sold.

The best views

Gellért hill with the citadel and the liberation monument. The hill is named after Gerhard (Gellért in Hungarian) who was a monk who became a martyr when he was pushed down the hill and died.

Fishermen’s bastion. Magnificent view across the Danube. Margaretha island, bridges and the Pest bank with the parliament building and St. Stefan’s basilica.

Castle hill and Buda castle. Plateau where one magnificent castle after another has been built - and destroyed by war. Today’s Buda castle was built on the remains of the old castles.

Chain bridge beneath Buda castle is the oldest and most well known bridge in the city.

Bridges over the Danube

The beautiful bridges over the Danube possibly play a not inconsiderable role in giving Budapest its special character.

Arpad bridge (Arpád híd). Modern bridge connecting the city’s ring roads.

Margaretha bridge (Margit híd). Built 1872-76, rebuilt 1948.

Chain bridge (Széchenyi Lanchíd). The oldest and most well known. First permanent link between Buda and Pest.

Elisabeth bridge (Erzsébet híd). Today a modern suspension bridge, originally built in honour of Queen Elisabeth of Austria/Hungary.

Freedom bridge (Szabadság híd). Connects Pest’s inner ring road with Gellért tér.

Petöfi bridge (Petöfi híd). Southern-most bridge with outermost ring road over the Danube.

Island in the middle of the Danube

Between Arpad bridge and Margaretha bridge sits Margaretha island. A car-free, 2.5 km long verdant oasis with gardens, spa bath, waterfall and rose garden.

Circular tour of the Danube

Perfect way to get to know Budapest. Tours by day or by night. Several departure points, including at the Marriott Hotel.

The most beautiful and the most unattractive in Budapest

Buy and read András Török’s Budapest - a critical guide if you are looking for an amusing insight behind the tourist facades. These quotes come from the book, which we have translated for you.

The most beautiful

- The views at night from the citadel on Gellért hill down over the river and the floodlit chain bridge

- The restored post office building on Hold utca

- The large hall in the ethnographic museum, formerly the supreme court

- The attention to detail in the stalls of the great market hall

- The interior of the Café New York

Most unattractive

- The catfish in the fish department of the great market hall

- The office building in the Vörösmarty tower (but just about to be demolished)

- Building of the Hungarian news agency (MTI) on the Buda embankment

- Defence ministry ruins up in the old town on the Buda side

Attractions in the municipal park include the Vajdahunyad castle, built to celebrate the city’s own millennium status.
