Food and drink in Budapest

Gundel is Hungary’s most well-known restaurant.

For gourmets with big budgets

None of Budapest’s restaurants have been awarded stars in the Guide Rouge. The following nearly qualify for star status:

Gundel. Stylish environment and classic French-Hungarian cuisine. Summer terrace. Allakerti útca 2. Book a table! 01-468 4040. (two ways to eat cheaper: come here for lunch and eat a value-for-money, three-course meal from the menu for approx. 3000 HUF. Or go to its sister restaurant Bagolyvár around the corner – a little more rustic but more often than not just as good.)

Vadródzsa. Nice cottage just outside the city. Stylish dining hall and impeccable service. Summer terrace. Pentelei Molnar útca 2.
Book a table! 01-326 5817.

Alabárdos, stylish environment and good service.

Hungarian in a classic environment

Alabárdos. Cellar vault dating back to the 1600s in a castle setting. Orzágház útca 2. Book a table! 01-356 0851.

Fortuna. Champagne cellar from the 1200s. Mix of traditional and modern. Hess András tér 4.

Légrádi Antique. Intimate restaurant in a stylish setting above a small antique shop.

Kárpátia. One of the oldest restaurants in the city. Ferenciek tere 7-8.

Múzeum. Slightly threadbare, romantic restaurant from 1885 with its famous goose liver in breadcrumbs and peppers. Right next to the national museum.

The best Italians and French

Marco Polo. Fabulous view across the Danube and the heights of Buda. Summer terrace.
Fausto's. Classic Italian dishes, kitsch interior décor. Dohány útca 5. Book a table! 01-269 6806.
La Fontaine. As French as it can be. Mérleg útca 10.

Dinner with song

Belcanto. Alongside the Opera. Do not be surprised if the waitresses sing an aria!
Book a table! 01-269 27 86. Dalszinház útca 10.

Dine in the bowling hall

Here you can socialise, drink beer and eat in the bowling halls. Try, for example, Mammut Bowling Club & Restaurant at Mammut 2 Shopping Centre, Extreme Bowling Club & Restaurant at Pólus Centre or the West-End Bowling Club & Restaurant in the West-End City Centre.

Café New York has been equally popular for more than 100 years.

Cafes from the good old days

Café New York. Lavish, turn-of-the-century environment and classic pastries. Erszsébet körut 9-11.

Ruszwurm. Classic from 1824. Szentháromság tér 7.

Gerbeaud. "The most wonderful café in the world" wrote a famous American travel writer. Vörösmarty tér.

Hauer. A retro setting, full of adverts and menus from the old days. Rákóczi út 47-49.
