Gaudí and modernism

When you walk around Barcelona you will come across – and be impressed by – buildings, the likes of which you have not seen. This is largely due to one of the city’s finest – and most remarkable sons - Antoni Gaudí. Gaudí was an architect from the modernist school and challenged all ideas about building design. His buildings are full of imagination, curved, clad in wonderful mosaics - in a word - animated. Do not miss: Parc Güell, Sagrada Familia, Palau Güell, Casa Batlló.

The Port. A wander through history. From the older parts dating back to the time when Spain was major seafaring nation to the New Port, with its throngs of restaurants, and the Olympia building from the 1992 Olympic Games.

Places worth seeing ?

The old town in Barcelona is like a living history.

The gothic quarter. Here, Roman ruins rub shoulders with impressive buildings from the Middle Ages. Do not miss the cathedral, Plaça del Rei and Santa Llúcia church.

The Eixample quarter. A Mecca for lovers of modern architecture. Some of the world’s finest buildings by people such as Gaudí. Do not miss Casa Battló and la Pedrera.

Do not miss!

Parc Güell. Architect Gaudí’s unusual, beautiful, highly imaginative park.
Montjuïc fountain. Magnificent work of art using water, built for the 1929 World Fair.
Poble Espanyol. “The Spanish Village”.  Examples of Spanish architecture.
Pedralbes monastery. Beautiful, peaceful monastery dating from 1327.
Parc de la Cuitadella. Enormous, beautiful park built on the ruins of an old citadel.

Las Ramblas, Barcelona’s major pedestrianised street and meeting point.

Streets and squares

Plaça de Catalunya. The heart of the city; joins the old town with the new areas.
Las Ramblas. Lively, beautiful boulevard running from Plaça de Catalunya to the port.
Avinguda Diagonál. One of the best shopping streets in the city, cutting right through Barcelona.
Passeig de Grácia. Street in the Eixample district where you will find some of the most groovy modern buildings.
