Not to be missed in Barcelona!

What do the people of Barcelona recommend to good friends who come to visit their city? Metro’s journalists in Barcelona have used these pages to share their hottest tips with you. Take a look for yourself!

Sightseeing tour on an open-top double decker

A comfortable way to view the many sights of Barcelona – hop on board a double-decker tourist bus. Choose from three different routes, together stopping at 40 of the city’s main attractions; everything from Gaudi’s house and museums to the beaches and the Montjüic hills.

Cycle paths in Barcelona

Cycling offers freedom and accessibility, provided you look out for all the cars around you. Barcelona has more than 100 km of cycle paths throughout the city. One of them follows Diagonal, the most important of all the major boulevards in the city.

Best views

If the city of Barcelona had eyes, they would be set on Tibidabo hill. From here, you can enjoy invigorating views, together with various tapas at Mirablau. Bar by day, after 11 p.m. it transforms into a club with a mix of the latest chart hits and golden oldies from the 60s, 70s and 80s. It is really something out of the ordinary to dance on the terraces of Mirablau, with an unbeatable view across the entire city and the Mediterranean shimmering in lights.

Draw breath at the Imax cinema

Don’t miss the cinema in the Old Port, or Port Vell. Here, both the cinema itself (400 seats) and the screen (900 m²) are in large format. Films are screened using three different techniques: Imax, 3D and Omnimax. Experience a whale swimming towards you or see objects that are so close to you, it feels as if you can touch them. It feels as if you are part of the action, thanks to the semi-circular cinema screen which draws you into the film.

Bar of dreams

El bosc de les fades (forest of fairies) is hidden away in a dark alley not far from Las Ramblas. The atmosphere is mystical and full of imagination. Experience a mid-summer night’s dream, with talking tees, mermaids and dwarves ... yes, this bar has a very special atmosphere, where the drinks are served in a luxurious world of make-believe and where bridges and waterfalls almost seem real.

Barcelona festivals.

If you reckon on being  in Barcelona in August, get ready to party! The last two weeks of August are one long street party. The party spirit is to be found in two parts of the city: the first week is in Gràcia, followed by a week in Sants. All streets are transformed into party arenas with dancing, music, correfoc, the burst of fireworks and crackers and happy people.

Exhibitions and evening concerts

At the Caixaforum centre for contemporary art and culture, an evening programme of entertainment is arranged every Wednesday during August, the month when the city itself goes on holiday. Music, ballet, exhibitions, book circles. The centre is open until midnight, an ideal time to discover the work of Rineke Dijkstra, or Bauhaus, in a delightfully fresh and slightly serene atmosphere.

The four cats

Right in the heart of the city lies the amazing Quatre Gats restaurant, with its charm preserved since the start of the nineteenth century. This was something of a base during Barcelona’s modernist period, and Picasso himself often came here. The walls are covered in works of art and pictures of artists. On top of that, the food is delicious and the prices reasonable; reckon on ?10 Mondays to Thursdays.

Ciutadella park

In the centre of the city, close to the water, lies one of Barcelona’s largest parks. Lots of things go on here during the summer, including concerts and rowing boats on the romantic lake. During the rest of the year, it is nice to leave behind the hustle and bustle of the city and take a stroll here. The city zoo lies within the park boundaries and Catalonia’s independent parliament is also based here.
